Walk for Freedom Experience

WOW. Oct. 20 was a powerful and impactful day for me. It was interesting to not only cover the A21 Walk for Freedom event but to also participate. Living in Mobile, Alabama, which is a port city, you fail to realize, at times, that bad things happen right in your backyard.

Human trafficking, also referred to as modern-day slavery, was a social justice issue that I did not know much about. Several of my friends at Spring Hill had participated in past walks, but I did not fully understand at the time what the cause promoted.

This year was different. As a young journalist, covering social justice issues may not be the most "sexy" or the most interesting stories, but it is necessary within our world that seems to struggle with promoting equality for all. Before we started walking, Anna Breland's sister told the attendees that people will look and stare at us because of our attire and our single-line formation.

While I walked along the route, I observed exactly what she was talking about. I typically hate that feeling of being watched or observed, but I actually felt a sense of peace and pride, knowing why I was walking in solidarity with others.

Thank you, Anna for organizing this chapter in Mobile, and thank you for your commitment to fighting injustices. For more information on A21, check out https://www.a21.org/content/walk-for-freedom-2018-home/gp2dhd?permcode=gp2dhd&site=true.
